When you’re thinking about what to wear to your 2016 prom, consider jewellery you feel “have” to wear. That doesn’t mean an item is obligatory, it just means you want to wear something with sentimental value. If, for example, you have family heirloom earrings, you not only have to secure the earrings, insure them, and, design your outfit around it – this would be true of any truly statement piece of jewelry. A small item, like a ring, is easy enough to wear and won’t disrupt your dress. You may wear a ring or a necklace that you “never take off.” Wear it to prom.

Don’t be embarrassed: a meaningful piece of jewelry is nothing to be ashamed of, as it can comfort you. If it’s your first prom, or big dance, you may feel a little self-conscious, dressed elegantly in a new dress and shoes. You may have selected your gown from a collection, for example, of Sherri Hill Prom Dresses 2016. You look and feel beautiful in your dress, but awkward on the inside. A cherished piece of jewelry may soothe you.

Psychics often ask for a small piece of jewelry to hold onto when they do a “reading” (psychic assessment). They ask for rings, necklaces or bracelets – any items you’ve worn next to your skin, as the items are infused with “you.” It’s called psychometry, from the Greek (“psyche” meaning soul, and “metron” meaning measure). If you believe in such things or think you might, the psychometry reading features the use of psychic abilities, like clairvoyance, clairsentience or clairaudience, according the psychiclibrary.com. “A psychic is able to pick up impressions, visions, thoughts or events relating to someone just by holding an object,” often a piece of jewelry, which has had only one owner, you, so the psychic isn’t confusing the reading with a previous owner (this means antique jewelry wouldn’t suit, as it carries “residual psychic energy,” notes myspiritcare.com). The oft-worn jewelry holds imprints of emotions, sounds, scents, tastes or images. In other words, wear jewelry that makes you comfortable.

That now said, you can consider accessorizing your probably-procured-from-Sherri Hill Prom Dresses 2016. It’s very important to keep your jewelry simple and let your prom dress “speak” for itself. Then again, this may be your opportunity to wear borrowed or family jewelry, or to liven-up a look.  In the Huffington Post, jewelry expert and designer Urvi Tejani encourages readers to mix vintage with new jewelry. Tejani is not an advocate of being, what she calls “matchy-matchy.” She has tips:

  1. If you’re wearing an asymmetrical gown (any kind of single-sleeved dress, whether, single strapped, capped, short or long-sleeved), do not wear a necklace. If your dress is asymmetrical, opt only for a pair of earrings and a statement bracelet.
  1. If you plan on wearing any headpiece (tiara, anyone?)Headband, clips, barrettes, etc.: bring hair decorations when you select and buy jewelry.
  1. Do not wear a watch. This is supposed to be a mindlessly fun evening. This doesn’t mean you won’t be respectful, because you will. A wristwatch will definitely detract from your goal of sophisticated, and is just inappropriate.
  1. Don’t over-accessorize: realize you are a competent, beautiful person. You do not want to distract from a beaded, embroidered or patterned gown and you certainly do not want to layer upon it.
  1. Make sure you have enough prep time. Select everything you’ll wear before prom, before you’re even getting ready.
  1. Keep your personal style. This means, even if you are wearing a gorgeous gown and you’re not used it, you need to be sure that when you’re all ready and done, everyone around you will talk about how you look like you, but beautiful.
  1. Choose jewelry with color.
  1. Quality lasts a lifetime. Don’t bother with inexpensive jewelry. You never know if you’ll be allergic to cheap metals and coatings.
  1. Don’t wear wire earrings – they’re too casual, catch on things when you’re slow dancing, and just not right for prom.
  1. Be sure you try your jewelry on with your dress before you buy. Jewelry is often non-returnable, non-refundable.
