Whether you’re shopping in secret or dictating your preferences to your significant other, choosing the right ring can be a tough task. After all, it’s something you’re going to be waring until death does you part.

So, we’ve put together a list of common mistakes you should avoid when shopping for the perfect engagement ring.

  1. Underestimating the ring size

The worst-case scenario is that you propose with a ring that is too small. It’s tough trying to guess the size of her finger, but there are ways to get pretty close. One of our favourite covert options is to ask a friend to take her to a jewellery store under the guise of trying on other rings. If this isn’t possible, bring one of her rings to the jeweller to be sized.

  1. Shopping online for diamonds

It’s important to see the diamonds in person and familiarise yourself with real-life examples to understand how the 4Cs work with your budget. Most people start researching online and develop preconceived notions about what kind of quality is acceptable. It’s tough to try and judge a diamond without seeing it in person. Also, if you’re looking for a fancy coloured diamond, you should consult a pink diamond rings specialist for expert advice.

  1. Focusing on the setting

An engagement ring setting changes the whole look of the piece. But, the centre of it all is the main stone. It’s the stone that takes up most the budget, so make sure you love the stone more than the setting, which can be changed at any time.

  1. Picking a trendy setting

Fortunately, you can always change a setting, but it can be costly depending on the style you like. Some people build an emotional attachment to their original design, anyway, and don’t want to change it. It’s a good idea not to pick something too trendy, though, that might be regretted later on.

  1. Trying too hard to be original

Many women try to stay away from certain styles because their friends or family have something similar. But, this is a big purchase and something you need to be happy wearing every day. So, get what you want. It doesn’t matter if other people have a similar style.

  1. Buying something that is too good to be true

If you’re shopping for diamonds, remember that if something seems too good to be true, it likely is. The diamond industry is fairly transparent, and it’s important to do price checks and make sure you are getting the real deal.

Keep in mind there are a few things about the quality of a diamond that can drastically change the price. Things such as strong fluorescence could affect the visual appearance of the diamond and that takes away from the value of the gem.

Also, if the stone isn’t certified by a well-known diamond-grading lab, there’s a chance it could be clarity-enhanced which also takes away from the value of the diamond.

If you can, try to see a stone in person and if not, make sure you only buy from a reputable source that offers guarantees and return policies.
