The holiday season is such a great time to re-connect with family, but it can feel impossible to please everyone. After all, you’re bringing together people of different generations, each of which has their own ideas about what makes the perfect Christmas. It’s important to create traditions that offer something for everyone, so here are some ideas for activities that can be enjoyed by people of many ages.

  1. Have a baking party

Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without vast amounts of sweet things, so get the family together for a baking-themed party. You can even bake some delicious homemade gifts to give out to teachers, co-workers and neighbors. Hosting a cookie party is fun for all ages, whether they’re little ones learning to using the frosting tools or the older ones supervising the fun. You could also bake and decorate gingerbread houses, Christmas cupcakes or any other delicious desserts you enjoy.

  1. Have a family portrait taken

The holidays bring people together, so they’re an excellent excuse to take an updated family portrait of your immediate or extended clan. Some families make a day of it by going to a local studio in their matching sweaters, followed by a holiday-themed lunch. Others opt to hire photographers such as Maggie Rife Ponce, who offer options such as relaxed, at-home portraits. What you choose should depend on your family’s style and your budget.

  1. See a Christmas lights switch-on

Most towns and cities across America make a big event of their holiday lights switch-on, which are usually advertised on their Facebook page or website. If you’re not too inspired by your own town’s lights, find a small, historic local town, as they usually have pretty and atmospheric holiday celebrations. Most of these events include live music, Christmas craft markets and carnival rides, so they are fun for the entire family.

  1. Watch holiday movies together

For a low-effort tradition that all the family can enjoy, put some Christmas movies on TV, dim the lights and serve up some Christmassy movie night snacks. The great thing about Christmas movies is that they tend to appeal to all generations, so there are fewer arguments about who gets control of the remote. Start your movie marathon off with some movies for the littlest kids, such as A Charlie Brown Christmas, and once they’re in bed, you can enjoy family favorites from Home Alone to It’s a Wonderful Life.

  1. Spend some time outdoors

A lot of holiday traditions involve sitting indoors and eating a lot, so let the kids burn off some energy while the adults get some fresh air. Before or after your holiday feast, make some time for a walk in a local forest, ice skating, sledding, or visiting the beach (depending on your local climate). Families often drive each other crazy when they’re cooped up together at home, especially when you’ve got visitors staying. So, make some time to enjoy the outdoors so the holiday season doesn’t feel too claustrophobic.

Traditions make Christmas more fun, but it can be difficult to include all ages. Make sure you have some activities that can be adapted to suit the different generations.
