How to Pick a Degree Subject

When you decide to attend college to gain a degree, choosing the subject is an important decision. Some careers dictate which subject you should obtain a degree in, but others are less strict. What’s more is that if you aren’t sure which career you want yet, the choice is even wider.

There are a number of considerations to think about when picking the right degree subject for you. Ask yourself these questions and you should be able to at least narrow down your choices.

What Do You Enjoy?

The first question you should ask yourself is what you enjoy doing. Of course, choosing a degree subject based only on what you like doing might not be something that leads to a career you’ll enjoy too, but it’s a good start. It will also eliminate any subjects that you really don’t like. There is no point in taking a degree which will involve a lot of in-depth study in something that you find boring.

Make a list of the subjects you enjoyed the most at high school, as well as a list of hobbies that you like to do. This will give you an idea of what degrees might suit you best.

What Are You Good At?

The next step is to narrow down that short list even further. You know what you enjoy, but what are you good at? There will be some subjects that you are better at than others, and if you want a degree that you are going to be able to use in a career, then choosing something you already have a good basis in is a great idea.

Look at your list of subjects you enjoy and cross out any that you aren’t so great at. What is left? You should have a list (perhaps a very short one) of subjects that you both enjoy and feel competent at. These are the ideal subjects for you to take.

What Does Your College Offer?

Finally, think about the college you want to go to. You will have gone through the OSU admissions requirements online at CampusReel, looked at the college campus, researched the nearby towns, and read about its reputation. You are likely to have chosen your college before you have chosen your subject.

So, in knowing what you are good at and what you enjoy, and knowing which college you want to attend, you can see what is on offer. What correlates from all lists? What does your chosen college give you that is on your short list? That is the degree that will work best for you.

What happens, though, if there is nothing that looks tempting on the course list and yet you are still sure that you want to attend that college? If this is the case, you can start with a degree in general studies and then go on to specialize at a later date, once you have a better idea of what it is you want to do.
