It is always an exciting honor to find yourself invited to a friend’s wedding. Most couples spend a great deal of time trying to decide who to invite to their wedding, especially if they are limited in the number of people they can invite. Because of this, you should always do your best to respect the couple by responding as quickly as possible, finding a great gift for them, and by dressing appropriately for their event. If it is a close friend or family member, then you likely already know what you’re going to wear, but if not there are some things to consider.

Some weddings are more formal in nature, so you must be respectful of that and dress accordingly. Others might be more relaxed, but that does not mean you should show up in jeans and a t-shirt. Furthermore, if you have been invited to a more cultural wedding, such as an Asian wedding, you will want to ensure that what you wear is appropriate.

Some couples who are holding an Asian wedding are perfectly fine with Western guests wearing whatever they would to a Western wedding. However, you will want to be clear on this point when you accept the invitation. You will also want to bear in mind a few things when you choose your outfit for the Asian wedding you are attending.

1. Color

First and foremost, it is important to remember that Asian weddings are always bright, vibrant events. There will be a great deal of color, and you will want to make sure that what you wear is not too muted.

Even though it might be acceptable at this point in time for a guest to wear black to a wedding in the West, those attending an Asian wedding should opt for something a bit more fun and colorful. In general, asian clothing tends to be more colorful anyway. Just try to avoid wearing red as this is most likely going to be the color of the bride’s wedding dress.

2. Skirt Length

Just as with weddings in the West, the length of the skirt or dress you wear is going to be important. If the invitation indicates that the wedding is going to be formal, opt for a longer hemline on your skirt or dress. If it is not specifically stated, your best bet will most likely be for a dress just above the knee. Something higher and more risqué is generally not going to be seen as appropriate for most types of Asian weddings.

3. Avoid White

One major similarity between Asian wedding guest attire and Western guest attire is the avoidance of white. While in the West, you would avoid wearing white because that is what the bride will be wearing; many Asian cultures view white as a color reserved for mourning. Wearing white to such a wedding would be quite the misstep in your choice of attire. You will be better off in a more colorful outfit for the event.
