Fun Things to Do with Foster Children in Scotland on the Easter Break

As a foster carer, you know the importance of brightening the days of the children in your care. Some have come from traumatic pasts of neglect and/or abuse whilst others have perhaps lost a parent. Even so, being separated from their birth families can be extremely stressful, so a few days out and about can do wonders for lightening their mood – if only in the moment. With that said, let’s take a look at some fun things you can do with foster children in Scotland.

A Day at a Petting Zoo

One of the joys of living in Scotland would be the fact that there are several petting zoos located around the country. It is for days like this that foster care allowances come in quite handy! Not only are foster carers compensated for their services, but there are funds to do things with the children in care.

What child, after all, doesn’t love animals? They may be afraid of some of the bigger, exotic creatures you’d find in the larger municipal zoos, but a petting zoo is quite different. Tamer animals are featured so that children can reach out and pet them! Many can even be fed – the animals that is, not the children. There’s time for that after the zoo! Some petting zoos may even have snack bars for a bit of refreshment whilst spending an afternoon with the animals.

Easter Egg Hunt

Many churches have Easter Egg Hunts in the afternoon on Easter after the morning services whilst they can be found at various civic groups and children’s centres around the country. Not only can the children have fun scurrying around to find those plastic eggs loaded with goodies, but if the weather is nice, they can release some of that energy eaten out of those baskets filled with chocolate rabbits, marshmallow chicks, and jelly beans.

Dabble in a Bit of Crafting

Most children, if not all, love to work with their hands. Looms have been trending in recent years and the latest models include instructions to make all sorts of projects. You can pick up small looms at your local craft shop and children of all ages can weave easy things like bracelets, keychains, and potholders for starters. It’s fun to do and the results are something they can proudly display!

It’s All About Having Fun

When all is said and done, it’s good to remember that children can get bored quite easily! As a parent or foster carer, it really pays to start planning fun things to do during those times when pupils are out of school and at risk of succumbing to boredom. Although ‘we’ know they won’t perish without something fun to do, try convincing them of that! With only a few short weeks until the Easter holidays, shouldn’t you be lining up activities for those “super boring” two weeks you will need to fill? You’ll be so glad you did.
