4 Tips to Decorate a Small Apartment

@projectfairytale

I am in the process of decorating and furnishing a new apartment, and it is rather small and we tried to find the best solutions available to make it look both beautiful but also functional and cozy. And these are my top tips for decorating and furnishing a small apartment.

  1. Use a lot of white and accent colors

@projectfairytale

A small space does not need a lot of dark colors, as these tend to close up the space. Try choosing light colors for the walls, floors and the large pieces of furniture. For example, because we could not add a large wardrobe in our new bedroom, as it would have left no space to move around, we decided to add a big wardrobe in the living room. We chose white wood and had it custom made to fit the space on the wall behind the door, so it would just blend in and not interfere with the space. We chose colorful art, pillows and funky chairs, but all the rest of the furniture will be in light colors in that space. The kitchen will be light cream, with natural textures like wood and stone.

2. Large mirrors

Whenever you want to create the illusion of a larger space, a mirror is the greatest trick in the book. I, for example have a narrow hallway, so I decided to put a large mirror on one wall and now, whenever I walk in, I am no longer frustrated by the width of the room, as I am too busy looking at my outfit. So besides creating the illusion of space, they can also distract the attention of those who catch a glimpse of their own reflexion.

3. Add a mural

@projectfairytale

As I mentioned earlier, the bedroom of this new apartment is rather small. And we wanted to give the impression of a more generous space, as I have a bit of claustrophobia. The solution, besides keeping the quantity of furniture to a minimum, was to add a mural on the wall behind the bed. We chose the PhotoWall ones as the options we found on their website looked the best. It also helped us with the headboard dilemma, as we wanted to build one ourselves, but now there is no need for one since we want to enjoy as much our new mural.

4. Let there be light

I think the best trick when it comes to the appearance of space is to play with light. A luminous space will always appear bigger compared to a dark, gloomy one, even if the latter is actually more generous in size. What I loved about this new apartment (besides its amazing view of the mountains) is the large windows. What I plan to do with that, or rather not do, is cover them with blinds or curtains during the day. I will order some custom-made, blackout drapes, as I need complete darkness for sleeping, but otherwise, the windows will never be covered.
