Poker is in the news right now as some of the best players in the world are currently in Las Vegas for the 2021 World Series Of Poker. This is the first in-person tournament since 2019, and it is a clear sign that players and fans alike are looking to move away from the online game and get back to physically playing with real opponents. The World Series Of Poker is a historic competition which attracts thousands, all looking for that big, life-changing win. With the vast media coverage surrounding the event too, it’s easy to see why poker continues to find new players every year.

However, though the popularity of the game remains high, a third of all poker tables have been closed in Clark County and it’s unclear if some will even reopen. For those who prefer the feel of the felt to the click of the mouse it is thankfully very easy to recreate the Vegas experience at home. If you want to go all-in and create your own poker room here are some tips.

Color

Your chosen color of decor doesn’t need to be one which is brash color, it could instantly give off less than a welcoming feel. You want this to be a place where players want to be. If the room is small then it would be better to use lighter tones to give the impression the room is larger than it is. Conversely if you’re lucky to have a larger room then you shouldn’t be afraid to use darker colors. If you’re struggling for inspiration, take a look at pictures of your favorite poker room in Las Vegas, or maybe even consider wood panelling to evoke the atmosphere of a game from the 50’s? Don’t forget though the color palette should extend to the flooring too. Take a look at my previous post on ‘Selecting the Best Flooring Option for Your Home’, to get some pointers on what could be the best to suit your needs and taste of course.

Lighting

This is a key element at any poker table, because everyone needs to be able to easily read their cards. So, it would be preferable to have an overhead light, centrally above the table with a dimmer so that the level of light can be adjusted to suit. Around the room, warmer colored bulbs rather than white light would be a safe bet to add to the ambience. Or instead of that if your budget allows, there is also the option of a table with changeable LED accent lights running around it. This would be a bold statement that would elevate the whole room. Although we’re considering the additional options, remember the affect that light breaking through the windows can have too. Therefore, we would recommend blinds or dark curtains over the windows so you have full control of the light in the room.

Furnishings

As there is no standard style for poker chairs, this gives you creative freedom to compliment the room. However, whilst the aesthetics are important, the key here is comfort. As games on average last upwards of an hour, it’s crucial to ensure your guests are able to concentrate fully on their hand and not their seat. Once you’ve got the players at the table sorted, do you have room for a sofa? Guests who aren’t playing may want to sit back, enjoy a drink and watch things unfold too. Next is decorating the walls. Are you going for a more relaxed lounge style? Or do you want everywhere visitors look to be a homage to your sporting heroes with signed merchandise all around?

If you’re going for the look of the most famous poker rooms in Las Vegas or replicating an underground speakeasy, the choices are endless. And the best part is that it can all be done within the comfort of your own home.
